Cultures of Creativity:
The Centennial Exhibition of the Nobel Prize

The National University of Singapore is proud to bring you the world-renowned “Cultures of Creativity – the Centennial Exhibition of the Nobel Prize”. Singapore is the 12th destination in this exhibition’s 15-city world tour. The event will run from 26 October 2006 to 24 January 2007.

A traveling showcase of creativity, this exhibition sets you thinking along two lines: what is creativity? And what is most meaningful in the creative process – the person or the environment? To find the answer to these questions, come see and be inspired by the original artifacts, unique displays and film snippets on the creative geniuses of the Nobel Laureates, the Nobel System and the man who made the Nobel Prize possible, Alfred Nobel.  Expect to learn more about the environment and the unplanned activities that inspired these men and women to think in entirely new directions.   For more information, see www.nus.edu.sg/nobelexhibition.

Creativity or Conformity:
Building Cultures of Creativity in Higher Education

We all agree that students learn best when they are strongly motivated. Most of us agree, too, that motivation is best stimulated in an environment which is open and flexible, which encourages innovation, which is, in a word, creative. And yet many of us find that such an environment is increasingly difficult to maintain. In an audit-driven culture, with its emphasis on targets, room for exploration constantly contracts. The demands of assessment, increasing student numbers, the RAE, and a growing administrative burden only exacerbate these problems.

On January 8-10, 2007, the Creativity or Conformity conference in Cardiff, Wales will focus on how these tensions affect higher education: its organisational cultures and its teaching and learning practices alike. Through sharing experience, it will discover practical methods of promoting creative learning in the face of increasingly stringent economic, legislative, and pedagogic constraints. And, more strategically, it will help us develop ways of influencing policy in this area.

Contributors and delegates are invited from every discipline and every area of responsibility in higher education. Educators, researchers, managers, institutional leaders, policy-makers, funders, practitioners, research students and consultants are all expected to take part. Speakers include specialists in education, psychology, biology, engineering, literature, health and sociology. But they also straddle traditional academic boundaries and are known for their inspirational and eclectic approaches to the issue of creativity. For more information, see www.creativityconference.org.

More generally, our work will also address the role of creativity in social interaction, with particular reference to children's development of life skills, autonomy and independence in an increasingly complex and demanding world. TED2007

TED2007, "Icons. Geniuses. Mavericks," will be held March 7-10, 2007, in Monterey, California. The past few TEDs have each had a broad content theme:"The Pursuit of Happiness", "Inspired by Nature", "The Future We Will Create." TED2007 will be different. Instead of a subject-matter theme, we are simply going to put on stage FIFTY REMARKABLE PEOPLE... ...and let them share whatever it is they are passionate about.

This, of course, is what TED has always been about. Bring together extraordinary people from every area of thought, work and culture, and lo and behold, astonishing connections are made, excitement and inspiration follow.

It works this way because all knowledge is connected. Hearing experts in your field may deliver incremental improvements to what you do... But if you want the big breakthrough, the giant Aha... then you have to emerge from your trench, climb to higher ground and see the big picture. For more information, see http://www.ted.com.

18th Annual American Creativity Association Conference

As we gather for ACA’s 2007 International Conference, our vision is to explore all aspects of creativity as applied to the pragmatic challenges and opportunities facing people everywhere including, but not limited to, business, industry, education, technology, health care, nonprofits, leadership, & culture. Presenters and participants will learn from each other through interacting and addressing real challenges and opportunities facing all sectors of endeavor. Join us for a wonderful opportunity to learn, observe, and engage in the craft of creativity.

Bringing ideas to action and innovation to market, creativity's role in personal and professional learning will be explored. How are knowledge and wisdom created and transferred to present and future practitioners? What happens when people confront a challenge not seen before or one that is beyond their current means? What are the approaches, processes, and hands-on techniques that accelerate the search for creative solutions? How do the “connections” get made that lead to new and innovative ideas or approaches? We will share valuable keys to creativity and the understanding that comes from these real world encounters, including the “magnificent failures” in which the lessons learned provide valuable insight to the application of creativity.

The 2007 International Conference of the American Creativity Association, Creativity@Work, will be held March 21-23 in Austin, Texas with pre & post Conference Institutes on March 19-20 & March 24. ETech: Emerging Technology Conference

In 2007, we expect Internet access to be instant, music collections to fit into our pockets, and communication as a constant. Technology is so tightly woven into our lives that at times we scarcely notice it. And yet, there are innovators, hackers, and thinkers plotting revolutions—often by simply reexamining underlying assumptions we already take for granted. From the infrastructure supporting mass-market players, the promise of mass computing, and alternative energy sources to personalized medicine, movie magic, web heresies, and talking paper, ETech 2007 explores the technological rejiggering and changes in perspective that are poised to blast off into the realm of magic. Join us March 26-29, 2007 in San Diego, CA—be a part of the ideas, tools, and discussions happening today that will give rise to the magic of tomorrow. For more information, see the event web site at  http://conferences.oreillynet.com/et2007.

Creativity in Advertising 2007

Consumers are increasingly difficult to engage. They control their own media, they multi-task, they timeshift. And, increasingly, they resent the volume of ads we push at them – yet they are at least quite interested in creating their own ads if we invite them to. All this puts increasing pressure on ad creativity, to cut through the clutter and genuinely involve our target audiences – emotionally as well as rationally. The ability of consumers to choose what media they engage with, and when, creates a complex challenge for creatives; a challenge both of precisely defining the people you wish to reach, of identifying where and when to find them and of creating the ads that will entice and enchant them.

This year’s conference, on March 29th in London,  offers the chance to debate some of the key issues surrounding creativity and provides some real insight of right brain thinking and campaign success stories that deliver creative inspiration and build brands.
Target Audience: Anyone responsible for marketing brands - from advertising and marketing services agency managers and creatives - to marketing teams from client companies who want to understand how to make best use of their creative resources. For more information, see event web site at http://store.warc.com/DisplaySection.aspx?Section=8&ProductID=3315&TabID=1.

HCI Educators 2007: Creativity3--Experiencing to Educate and Design

HCIEd 2007 (March 29-30, Aveiro, Portugal) is the annual international conference of Human-Computer Interaction Educators from both industry and academia. This year the conference focuses on the theme "Creativity3: Experiencing to educate and design." While it has been argued that creativity is an innate human quality, we have also seen that, as we expand our experiences of creativity and increase our repertoire of design solutions, we can improve our ability to develop new, creative and innovative HCI design solutions. Creativity, education and design as well as its reach and vivid experience are the dimensions we want to explore in HCIEd 2007, endeavouring at a better understanding of creative processes and abilities while encouraging and nurturing creative mindsets.

As attentive and proactive educators we need to ensure that our teaching practices empower creative thinking on the design of interactive systems and applications. Now and in the future, HCI teachers are challenged to introduce Design as a permanent creative process of the technological developments that, apart from level of complexity, sustain our everyday life activities. An HCI educator’s “provocation” is therefore to encourage a permanent creative engaging experience. HCIEd 2007 aims at broadening and promoting the discussion concerning HCI education and its related aspects. The Conference seeks to strengthen the dialogue among disciplines contributing to HCI education, such as psychology, design, ergonomics, etc. For more information, see www.bcs-hci.org.uk/hcied2007/index.php?nav=home.
